I have a routine that I abandoned when I got sick a year and a half ago that I hope to resume shortly.
Whenever I came across an article or post on the web I wanted to read during the workday (usually work-related, but a distraction from what I was working on at the moment regardless), I’d hit a keyboard shortcut to add it to Instapaper (later, Pocket).
A few times a week I’d go to the gym, and part of my cardio routine was spent on the elliptical machine reading any of those articles I felt like.
And I’d only let myself read from that queue while on an elliptical machine.
So going to the gym, something that required willpower on my part, was rewarded not only by mild endorphins and long-term health, but getting to do a bunch of “junk-reading” I wouldn’t allow myself during productive time.
I’ve been reading The Power of Habit on a family vacation recently and realized this was a classic cue-habit-reward loop I’d unknowingly devised to work a positive habit into my life.
Anyway, thought that was interesting. Hope to get back to it after my vacation, and also find other ways to work positive habit loops into my life.
The book has been pretty interesting. I’m 55% in and recommend it so far!
