I had to deal with 1, 2, 3, 9, and 11 at the first company I started.
We survived the bust, but it was the most difficult period of my life.
This time around I’ve been much more careful and conservative. That doesn’t mean we’re immune, and no one knows what the world’s gonna look like in 12 months, but I think we’re in better shape.

The page with 10 results took .4 seconds to generate. The page with 30 results took .9 seconds. Half a second delay caused a 20% drop in traffic. Half a second delay killed user satisfaction.
This conclusion may be surprising — people notice a half second delay? — but we had a similar experience at Amazon.com. In A/B tests, we tried delaying the page in increments of 100 milliseconds...
