Stopping runaway CPU usage by mds, mdworker, and...
I found that mds and mdimport were constantly running, and often taking up to 90-100% of my CPU when it was otherwise idle. These processes are used by spotlight to index the hard drive and make files searchable. It usually runs when the system is idle and should run instantly whenever files are updated. My CPU usage seemed excessive though, and detrimental to battery life. So I dug around to...

wintercheck: Last month, I had paper tubes manufactured in Wayne, NJ and went down to see how they were actually made. Here’s a video. This is fun! I love factory tours and they were my favorite family vacation as a kid. I’ve seen factories that make ice cream, cheese, cranberry juice, chocolate, potato chips, cheesecake, and cars. Probably more. It kinda sucks that most factories...

UX > The Photojojo Store →
6ixpassions: Looking for some gifts for Christmas, I end up at Photojojo, a community of photographers who like photo tips and tricks and nice gadgets. I really like their store. Simple to understand and use. I’ve the feeling that even my mother who still has some difficulties sending some email, will understand how to use this site. It’s pretty rare that I have nothing to say as an UX...

A pocketable camera for an SLR nerd
marco: I used to carry my SLR and laptop with me in my huge backpack every day, but a few changes have resulted in almost never bringing my camera day-to-day anymore: My commute is now on the subway, which is much more crowded and much less practical for backpack-wearing. I have a great messenger bag that works much better for the subway, but it can’t comfortably hold more than a few pounds....

So my daughter wants a mobile phone
bijan: This morning, like most Fridays, I take my daughters to breakfast before school (the boy hangs at home with mom. No preschool on Fridays) My oldest is now 10. And these days she is selling me hard on why she wants a phone. This morning was no different. I’m not ready to give her one yet. And i gave her my reasons. Then she asked “dad, when did you get your first phone?” I...

Christopher's Gentle Fist
cdixon: Buying something on Amazon today I noticed this graphic near the checkout button: Apparently if I enter “Christopher’s Gentle Fist” on other websites I can use my Amazon shipping and payment info: I would argue that when we’ve gotten to the point that we are asking users to type phrases like “Christopher’s gentle fist” in order to buy underwear and laptops, it is time to rethink...

Corpse Spam →
heyitsnoah: File Under: Spammers are really smart (and funny). So apparently in World of Warcraft you can’t spam people with commercial messages or you get kicked off. However, there is a lot of money in selling gold to players and there are a bunch of sites that competing to sell it to you. So their solution, as Seamus at Virtual Economics explains is to arrange a bunch of dead bodies in the...

Harinezumi Digital.
chelseatatum: I recently bought the Zumi Digital from Photojojo.com. Above is one of the pictures I have taken with it. As you can see, this toy camera takes lo-fi vintage looking pictures. It was a little on the pricey side ($160), but as a camera enthusiast, I had to buy it. What I love is that I can get this look without having to manipulate my pictures. I love photoshop as much as the next...

Intent - and how to "Like" it
gustafalstromer: Hoan Ton-That is one of the smartest people I know. Earlier today we spoke about how the social gaming/virtual goods companies could save the incentivized offer industry which have had a bad week. The offer industry is built on the concept of product bundling. Andrew Chen wrote a great post about here so wont go into the details. In search marketing we’ve learned that the...
